Senior Phase Subject Choice – Course Choice for S4
At this stage in their education, pupils have to begin to reflect on the direction they hope to take in the future and choose the courses which will allow them to achieve success and fulfil their career aspirations.
S4 pupils study six National Qualifications Courses. All pupils will do qualification courses in English/Literacy and Mathematics/Numeracy, the remaining four subjects will allow pupils a measure of choice. In addition, all pupils will continue to participate in PE and PSE.
A broad-based set of qualifications should be the starting point for qualifications in S4, this ensures doors are kept open to allow for further specialisation later in the Senior Phase and allows pupils to develop a repertoire of skills.
Before making course choice decisions, pupils should consider the following questions:
Strengths - Which subjects do you enjoy and are good at? Where do your skills / talents lie? Based on S3 progress, which courses might you be most successful in during S4?
School reports will give recommendations about which courses would be the best suited to pupil’s strengths. Faculty Heads and Subject Teachers can give advice about the demands of each course and course choice will be discussed with Guidance Teachers.
Career Plans - Do you have a clear idea of what you wish to do once you have left school? Do you know what specific qualifications you will need? Do you have to get all your qualifications in one sitting?
It is important that pupils think carefully and make informed choices at this point in their school life. A bit of research now is vital!
