Languages for Life *
In all courses, pupils receive three fifty minute periods of language learning where pupils build on their language knowledge by increasing their vocabulary and grammar and enhancing their four language skills (Listening, Reading, Writing and Talking). The S3 Modern Languages courses blend pupils learning ensuring they access a stimulating level 4 curriculum as well as preparing pupils for
National Certificates. S3 pupils also receive and additional period of Language learning which focuses on Employability themes and gives pupils the opportunity to work towards the “Modern Languages for Life and Work Award” Level 3/4.
*Languages for Life.
This course is by invitation only.
This course aims to develop pupils’ language learning whilst also focusing on improving their global literacy to enhance these skills before moving on to complete National qualifications in S4. The course has been designed specifically for pupils who we feel would benefit from enhanced literacy provision or for pupils who would be unsuited to the demands of a whole S3 Modern Languages Curriculum.
As part of the course, pupils will have the opportunity to learn French, German and Spanish as well as having the opportunity to have a taster of languages such as Arabic and Mandarin whilst also working towards a variety of Modern Languages qualifications and also spending time working on key elements of literacy such as reading and spelling.
The Modern Languages Department aims to ensure that pupils select a course which is relevant, encourages pupils to achieve well and meets the needs of each individual learner. With this in mind, the S3 Languages for Life course is open to pupils who have been identified by Modern Languages, ASN and Guidance staff as pupils who would benefit from an alternative S3 course.
National Courses
(N3-Advanced Higher) – French
(N3 – Advanced Higher) – German
(N3-Higher) – Spanish
The Faculty endeavours to regularly offer to all pupils the opportunity to engage with other cultures and languages out with the regular curriculum and does so in partnership with organisations such as SCILT and E-Sgoil. As such, opportunities to engage with beginners Arabic, Mandarin and Japanese courses are offered.
