Senior Phase Course Choice – Course Choice for S5
At this stage in their education, pupils have to begin to reflect on the direction they hope to take in the future and choose the courses which will allow them to achieve success and fulfil their career aspirations.
In S5, most pupils will follow 5 courses at Level 6 or Level 4/5 plus PSE and PE. In addition, pupils will have two periods of Wider Achievement and some study time.
It is important that pupils in S5 follow a course of study which is challenging and worthwhile. Guidance teachers will discuss with each pupil the number and level of courses that should be followed in S5. This will be based on the pupil’s performance in S4 courses, and the work rate and attitude they have demonstrated in their school life so far.
Leaving School after S4 - Christmas Leavers
At the end of S4, pupils whose 16th birthday is before 1st October 2026, may leave school to go into employment or further education.
The remainder must stay in full-time education until at least Christmas in 2026. They may either follow appropriate school courses and work towards gaining unit passes in some subjects, or apply for exceptional entry to the College. If they are successful, they will then begin a full-time college course in August/September which can be continued once the student has reached the statutory leaving date. Exceptional entrants to college receive free transport to NESCOL until they officially leave school at the end of December. In order to qualify for this pupils need to collect a transport form and complete this as soon as possible. Speak to your guidance teacher if you are considering applying to College.
Course Choice for S5
Before making course choice decisions, pupils should consider the following questions:
Strengths - Which courses do you enjoy and are good at? Where do your skills / talents lie? Based on S4 progress, which courses might you be most successful in during S5?
School reports will give recommendations about which courses would be the best suited to pupil’s strengths. Faculty Heads and Subject Teachers can give advice about the demands of each course and course choice will be discussed with Guidance Teachers.
Career Plans - Do you have a clear idea of what you wish to do once you have left school? If so, do you know what specific qualifications you will need? Do you have to get all your qualifications in one sitting?
It is important that pupils think carefully and make informed choices at this point in their school life. A bit of research now is vital!
